Are you an empty nester? What to do when kids leave home

When kids have left the house, it's a bittersweet time for parents. While you are proud of them and feel it is time for them to leave the nest, you feel a little sad at how empty the house feels. If you are a new empty nester, it may be time to think of some ways to update your home to reflect the change in your family's living habits.

Now that your kids are out of the house, chances are that some areas of your home are getting a lot less use. Here are a few possible upgrades you can make to your home:

Kitchen - Without having to rush to get dinner on the table in between sports practice, band concerts, or other teen activities, you may find you have more time for cooking. You may want to consider sacrificing some eating area in your kitchen in favor of more counter space for meal preparations.

Basement - If your basement has served as a playroom and/or video gaming center, consider transitioning the space into a semi-private guest apartment. What about a home exercise center? An office? Think of what will suit your current needs the best.

Garage - Bikes and sports equipment can be stored away to make more room for tools and gardening equipment. You may find that there are a lot of things you can give away or throw away to make your garage a new and useful workspace for one of your hobbies.

One word of caution: As you consider changes in your home, be sure to consult your child before getting rid of his or her belongings. Some things can hold sentimental value for your young adult. You may want to hold back on reclaiming a college student's bedroom, so that he or she will feel welcome on weekends and holiday and summer breaks.
